  • The soldiers knew the Johansens were friends of the Rosens and thought they were hiding them.

  • I felt very nervous because I thought for sure that Annemarie, her mother, Kirsti and Ellen would get caught.

  • They are frightened because they thought Kirsti would tell the soldiers Ellen was Jewish.

  • She likes all the scenery and she remembers a lot of the place.

  • Well this time it is colder, all the plants are shriveled, and there are soldiers everywhere. They aren't there for fun; they are there to get Ellen to safety.

  • All the people that are to remember "Aunt Birte" No, they are all the Jewish people who are escaping with the Rosens.

  • He explains by saying that it will build up Annemarie's bravery.

  • "Yes. Mama has never lied to me before. Never. But I know there is no Great-aunt Birte. Never once, in all the stories I've heard , in all the old pictures I've seen, has there ever been a Great-aunt Birte."
  • I think she sounds more mature in this line because she sounds straightforward and strong.








    Chapter 10

  • They probably felt frightened if the soldier would find that the coffin was empy.

  • she tells him that the "dead remains" had typhus in them that could still be contagious.
  • 4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?
In the psalm it reads the title of the book. I think it means God can number all the stars. How does that apply to the Jewish people?

Chapter 11

  • 1. What is in the casket?
  • Lots of blankets and sweaters for the people at the fake ceremony.

  • 2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
  • he gave the baby the medicine so thst he could put it in a deep sleep sleep so that it wouldn't cry.

  • 3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
  • At the beginning of the book when Annemarie, Ellen, and Kirsti meet the soldiers Kirsti doesn't know much about them and she acts very brave.

  • She makes observations such as it is hard to wait for someone that could be in danger, or waiting can be tiring if late at night.




    3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety
  • she worries so her Mom won't get caught by the soldiers with the Rosens and to then get a bad punishment.

  • they treated her with great disrespect! I would have done the same thing as Annemarie and act like a useless child.

Chapter 17

  • They all put out Denmark's flag (not just non Jews) and Annemarie even wore Ellen's star of david necklace.

  • The Nazis shot Peter and Lise died when a car hit her.

  • She hides it inthe pocket of lise's old, yellow, dress.
